Miami International Airport Information

Miami International Airport (IATA: MIA), just northwest of downtown Miami in the US, is the primary airport for the South Florida region. It handles passenger flights to cities in the Americas and Europe, as well as the Canary islands off the African coast. Many flights from Latin America arrive in the US at Miami International. It just squeaks in as the largest airport in Florida ahead of Orlando, and is the 12th busiest in the US- 2nd by volume of international passengers.

Opening in 1928 as Pan American Field, the operating base of Pan American Airways Corporation, the airport was left largely unused when Pan American shifted its operations elsewhere. In 1934, Eastern Airlines began operating there, followed 3 years later by National Airlines. The airport now covers 3300 acres and has 4 runways and 3 terminals- North, Central and South.
